Brook Sanctuary Trip

On Tuesday December eighth Room 3 and Room 6 went to the Brook sanctuary to look at the steam there. We had lots of parents with us too. When we got there we were put in groups. The first thing my group did was to measure the flow of the stream by how fast a tennis ball could float over ten metres.
Then we went and caught bugs in the stream. Lochie caught three freshwater crayfish. I caught lots of mayflies and Dobson flies as well.
The range of bugs showed the stream was quite healthy.
Then we went back to school.

School Picnic

On Monday night my family and I went to the school picnic. First I had a Juicey and then played tackle rugby. Then the 3 legged race started and I went with Logan and we won! When I got back to the game the score was 3-2 to my team. Just then the sack race started and I was versing 9 year olds and I won that. Then I had a rest and a bottle of fizzy and I drank it all in ten minutes. Afterwards the tug of war started and I was in that. It was 8 year olds and under and the boys won! Then it was time to go. I can’t wait to do that again next year.

As part of our Clean Stream Inquiry all of Kahikatea Syndicate listened to Mel from the Brook Sanctuary who talked to us about what the importance of looking after our streams. For a stream to be healthy it needs to be cool, clear and flowing so that a number of different species can exist. We are really looking forward to meeting up with Mel again up at the Brook Sanctuary next week for our field study!
